Northern Rockies Fire Rescue History

Northern Rockies Fire Rescue—formerly Fort Nelson Fire & Rescue—has proudly served the community since 1944.

  • 1944: Established in Muskwa Heights as a small local response team
  • 1960s: Formation of a volunteer fire department, first fire engine, and dedicated fire hall
  • 1970s–1980s: Expansion of apparatus, training standards, and introduction of paid firefighters
  • Modern Era: Development into a highly trained, all-risk emergency response organization

Over the decades, the department has adapted to meet evolving community needs—expanding into specialized rescue, hazardous materials response, and emergency medical services. It has demonstrated leadership and resilience through major incidents including wildfires and complex rescues.

Today, the department operates with full-time firefighters providing 24/7 coverage, supported by paid-on-call members, and staffed administrative support during business hours.
