FORT NELSON - The event involving the RCMP that occurred in Fort Nelson on September 8, 2022 involving an armed suspect at a local business has raised questions about the NRRM's Voyent Alert system, in relation to its purpose, and why alert of the incident was limited to schools and only certain organizations, and not communicated broadly community-wide.
The purpose of the Voyent Alert system is for the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality to communicate information out to the general public or public in a geographic area when the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) is activated. The NRRM will activate its Emergency Operations Centre and begin carrying out its Emergency Response Plan to manage a coordinated response to support emergency response personnel in the field, during major emergency events or disasters such as floods or wildfires for example. Most frequently, the Voyent Alert system will be used to communicate the stages of an evacuation. The EOC was not activated yesterday.
As yesterday’s event was an active RCMP incident, any information shared would have been at the direction of the RCMP. During the evolving incident, the RCMP did not provide any detail or direction for the NRRM to communicate to the general public.
As all, this incident will be debriefed with the agencies involved and impacted, and feedback will be shared to help support a more coordinated approach to communication for future.
