PUBLIC NOTICE
Muskwa River Vehicle Access Restriction
FORT NELSON – Vehicle access to the Muskwa River via the Muskwa River Bridge access point and to the Fort Nelson River beside the P3 Bridge on the Sierra-Yoyo-Desan (SYD) Road has been restricted since April 23, 2020. The closure is in effect to ensure public safety, for several reasons:
- River freshet season continues to cause erratic fluctuations in river water level
- There is still potential for ice to dam water flows causing flash flooding/river level fluctuations
- A safety risk is present in the form of a vehicle that is trapped in an ice jam in the Muskwa River.
We regret that the closure hampers use of the river by recreational boaters, but federal and provincial authorities, as well as emergency services, are in unanimous agreement that in order to protect the public, vehicle access at these two points will continue to be temporarily restricted. Residents may notice a temporary gate by the Muskwa Bridge, this measure is being put in place to allow quicker emergency access should it be required.
We thank you for your cooperation with this temporary closure, made with your safety in mind.
