Firefighter (Full-time Permanent)

Reporting to the Fire Chief or designate, the Firefighter works as a team member to respond to various emergencies, which may entail combating and extinguishing fires, saving lives and property, medical incidents, dangerous goods, and emergency rescues. Duties also include performing fire prevention and public education services under the general supervision of a senior officer, maintaining apparatus through daily inspection and routine preventative maintenance, participation in required training, and various other duties that may be performed during other emergencies and non-emergencies that may need the assistance of the fire department.

Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent, IFSAC and/or Pro Board certified to NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level I and II with NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations.
  • Possess or able to obtain Medical First Responder/Emergency Medical Responder certification.
  • Valid Class 5 BC driver's license with air brake endorsement, and ability to obtain a Class 3 and Class 4 BC driver’s license.
  • Must be fit and able to handle the sustained, intense physical and psychological effort required to perform this position and must be willing and able to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions;
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, work well in a team and be able to work with a minimum amount of supervision. Additionally, the ability to maintain pleasant and effective relations with the public and fellow firefighters even under adverse conditions or circumstances; and
  • This position is considered a position of trust within the Municipality and the successful applicant must successfully pass a Police Information Check including a Vulnerable Sector check.
Status/Hours/Shifts

Full-time; Permanent, an average of 42 hours per week; shift work (including evenings, and weekends will be required).

Rate

Firefighter: As per the IAFF Local 2782 Collective Agreement. The probationary rate is 70% of FF1 for the first 6 months, then 75% up to 1 year, 80% for the 2nd year, and 90% for the 3rd year. The current FF1 rate is $9,361.50/month: $51.25/hr. Please note this is the 2023 rate and is subject to change.
