On December 19, 2022, the Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada announced a federal investment of more than $1.3 million to support 27 active transportation planning projects in British Columbia.
Among the 27 projects receiving funding is the Northern Rockies Parks & Trails Active Mobility Study. The Government of Canada’s award of $50,000 was used to undertake site surveys, public engagement, and community consultation in preparing concept plans highlighting major accessibility improvements and new accessible pathways around Art Fraser Community Park and Andy Bailey Regional Park. These concept plans provide information for undertaking future capital projects for the detailed design and construction of park improvements.
Through the Northern Rockies Parks and Trails Active Mobility Study and ongoing Park Improvement Projects the NRRM is investing in community well-being. Enhancements and upgrades to these parks will open more opportunities for diverse and inclusive participation in community and regional spaces. Community engagement throughout the Study was key in understanding barriers and opportunities for participation in healthy lifestyles in the NRRM.
