Northern Rockies Fire Rescue Urges Campfire Safety Amid Drought Conditions
As the winter season unfolds, many are heading out to enjoy the stunning winter landscapes, hunting, and exploring our scenic wilderness areas. However, with ongoing drought conditions, Northern Rockies Fire Rescue (NRFR) has responded to six unattended and unextinguished campfires in the past month—fires that have spread deep into tree roots, requiring hundreds of firefighting hours and tens of thousands of gallons of water to extinguish.
To keep our winter landscapes, wilderness areas, and community safe, especially during this drought, we urge everyone to follow proper campfire safety guidelines:
Campfire Safety Tips:
- Keep campfires no larger than 1.5 feet across.
- Ensure your fire is completely extinguished before leaving. Stir ashes and embers with water until they’re cool to the touch.
- If water isn’t nearby, smother the fire with snow, dirt, or sand, stirring until cool.
As you enjoy the winter landscapes and wilderness areas, whether for hunting or outdoor recreation, remember that responsible campfire practices are essential to preserving the beauty of our environment, protecting our community, and preventing wildfires, especially during this drought period.
