MEDIA RELEASE

Resource Municipalities Coalition to Dissolve December 31, 2023

Fort Nelson, BC Sept 26, 2023 – The Resource Municipalities Coalition (RMC), a collaborative initiative originally established in 2014, and which the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality has been a supporter and partner of since that time will officially dissolve on December 31, 2023. This decision follows the October 2022 local government elections, where Coalition members and Councils saw sweeping change across the Northeast following the elections, and with that came a shift in many community’s priorities and budgets as a result.

Mayor Rob Fraser stated, “The Resource Municipalities Coalition has been a valuable organization for our communities to work together on issues of our region's development and sustainability. It is disheartening to see it come to an end. We are grateful for the support and partnership we shared with our fellow member municipalities over the years.”

The Resource Municipalities Coalition was a partnership between several municipalities in Northern British Columbia, including the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality, District of Taylor, District of Tumbler Ridge, and District of Mackenzie. Established with a primary purpose to address issues related to responsible resource development through collaborative efforts and financial support from its member municipalities, the RMC became a unified voice for Northeast communities on such interests as cumulative impacts, regional economic diversification, recruitment, retention and training of workers, and health.

Upon the resolution of its membership, the Resource Municipalities Coalition will ensure that all ongoing operations and financial commitments are effectively completed by November 30, 2023. This process will allow for a smooth and responsible conclusion of the coalition's activities.

While the coalition's existence will come to an end, the shared goals among these communities will continue to serve as a testament to the importance of regional collaboration in addressing resource development issues
