MEDIA RELEASE

Emergency Response and Evacuation Planning Amidst High Levels of Wildfire Activity

Fort Nelson, BC July5, 2023–As the region experiences an exceptionally active wildfire season, the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality (NRRM)has been leveraging the work done over time in relation to emergency preparedness and evacuation planning. As always, the NRRM is committed to prioritizing the safety of its residents and minimizing the direct impact of wildfires in the area. Recently, the NRRM has been collaborating with various government agencies, neighbouring communities and local first responders, to actively invest time and capacity in reviewing and updating existing emergency preparedness plans.

Mayor Fraser emphasizes the importance of emergency planning, stating, "We must always hope for the best but plan for the worst." With this mindset, the NRRM is proactively investing significant time and resources into ensuring that evacuation plans are adaptive based on current conditions such as the Donnie Creek wildfire to the south. Agencies such as the RCMP, Northern Health, BC Emergency Health Services, and others are actively participating in these discussions to ensure alignment and integration of their services within the overall emergency response plans.

While existing plans already consider many factors, including the closure of highways or transportation routes, availability of goods and services, and other essential resources necessary for safe evacuations. Drawing from the experiences of last year’s closure of the Sikanni River Bridge, which limited the transportation of resources and limited evacuation routes, and the potential of wildfires to continue to impact highways in the region this season. Depending on the specific situation, these plans are designed to facilitate safe evacuations in either the northern or southern directions. By taking a proactive approach to ensure that plans are flexible, responsive and reflect current information, the NRRM aims to provide its residents with the confidence and assurance that their safety is a top priority.

While the NRRM will continue to work diligently with all parties to enhance emergency response and evacuation planning measures. We remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents, we also urge all community members to stay informed and prepared during this challenging wildfire season.
