Recreation Centre Reopening Update - Sept. 3, 2020

As the leaves begin to turn and the lazy days of summer are close behind us, we’re pleased to report that the Rec Centre phases for reopening this Fall are on schedule as was reported mid-July.

As part of the Aquatic Centre reopening, work is well underway to complete the required safety planning and training, with the tanks filled in mid-August and lifeguards returning to the water this week for the first time since mid-March.  First-aid training will continue through next week, with a soft-opening planned for the week of September 14th for a small group of users to test our preparations and a full opening to the public to following the week of September 22nd

As is to be expected, NHL games won’t be the only venues where hockey looks a little different this season.  Discussions are underway with ice user groups to confirm ice times, with the ice plant scheduled to return to service the week of September 14th. Ice making will be underway the last two weeks of the month, and arenas should be ready for sports to begin early October.  In preparation for the upcoming season, the arena dry pads will be closed as of September 5th.

Last, we’re pleased to report that the Fall Leisure Guide will be released mid-September featuring fitness classes and youth programs among others to get us through our long northern winters.   We know it’s been a trying number of months and we’re all eager to just ‘get back to normal’.  It’s our responsibility to keep you, and each other, safe and clear of COVID-19.  Part of that will be to manage the number of users in our various spaces; in arenas (50 persons each), in the pool (40 people), in the curling facilities (50 people), in the community hall (50 people) and in general.  To account for those unlikely times where all facility users are called to one area (like an evacuation), people are encouraged to carry a mask and be prepared to wear it when physical distancing cannot be maintained.
