Preparations Underway for UBCM Next Week

FORT NELSON - The Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) is holding its annual convention in Vancouver from September 23 to 27, 2019 in Vancouver, BC and preparations are ramping up as Northern Rockies Regional Council prepares to take advantage of the opportunity to meet with provincial ministers and other key decision makers.

The theme for this year’s convention is resiliency and change, and this definitely strikes a chord for the Northern Rockies. As noted on the UBCM website, “From climate change to economic pressures, local governments are on the front lines managing the local impact of complex issues.… In an uncertain future, local leaders have a duty to learn from each other and from the past and to find new approaches to plan and thrive.”

This is exactly what is planned as Regional Council prepares to connect with as many government and corporate entities as possible during a meeting-packed five-day stay. Each Council member is prepared to speak on the key issues affecting the Northern Rockies. From local delivery of health care services and acquiring 9-1-1 service for the region, to policy that is resource development-friendly, there are topics that touch almost every provincial ministry.

“UBCM provides a venue for local governments to be heard by provincial ministers and I, along with the rest of Regional Council, intend to be a voice for residents of the NRRM,” said Mayor Gary Foster, “we will ensure that the concerns that are heard by us every day are also heard by the province of British Columbia.”
