Wasps (Yellowjackets) in Droves this Summer

2018 has produced a bumper crop of wasps in the Northern Rockies. Wasps can be aggressive, especially when disturbed, so "swatting" is discouraged, in favour of quietly moving away. It is also suggested that you remove any outdoor food sources, such as garbage and pet dishes. While painful, their stings are not harmful unless you have an allergy or receive a quantity of stings, especially near your airway, in which case you should seek medical attention.

The province of BC website has an informative page, "Managing Yellow Jacket Pests", for tips on dealing with wasps.
