NR Delegation Attends UBCM

The Union of BC Municipalities is an opportunity for local governments from all areas of BC to come together. This year a delegation of eight, that included Mayor Bill Streeper, Councillor Laurie Dolan, Councillor Lorraine Gerwing, Councillor Danny Soles and senior staff, joined more than 2,000 delegates from BC Local government, provincial government, related associations and media to attend this policy-making forum.

During the week, NRRM representatives met with eight provincial cabinet ministers, three official opposition critics, and senior staff from the Ministry of Forests, Lands & Natural Resource Operations, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Northern Health, BC Emergency Health Services , CN Rail, Canfor and Chevron.

The issues that elected officials are seeking support for include:

  • the critical importance of a successful LNG industry in BCCN Rail service delivery to the region
  • Lack of 9-1-1 service to the region (that includes a large stretch of the Alaska Highway)
  • Lack of federal or provincial washroom facilities on the federally-owned Alaska Highway from Mile 81 to the Yukon border
  • Health service gaps that include maternity, physiotherapy and ultrasound

A summary of meeting discussions can found in the Council Report. UBCM Photos
