PUBLIC NOTICE IS HEREBY given to the electors of the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality and School District #81 that an Election by Voting is necessary to elect a Mayor, six Regional Councillors, and five School Trustees for a four year term and that the persons nominated as candidates and for whom votes will be received are:

A General Voting Opportunity will be open to qualified electors of the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality on Saturday, October 20, 2018 between the hours of 8:00 am and 8:00 pm at the Municipal Office, Fort Nelson BC located at 5319 - 50th Ave South.


Advance Voting Opportunity

Advance voting will be open between the hours of 8:00 am and 8:00 pm at the Municipal Office, 5319 - 50th Ave. South, Fort Nelson, BC on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 and Wednesday, October 17, 2018.


Special Voting Opportunities

Two special voting opportunities will be open at:

  1. the Toad River Community Hall, Mile 422 Alaska Highway, Toad River, BC from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm on Friday, October 12, 2018.
  2. will be open at the Fort Nelson Hospital, 5315 Liard Street Fort Nelson, BC from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Saturday, October 20, 2018.

Any qualified elector may vote at a special voting opportunity if circumstances deem they will be present at the location and during the hours established for the special voting opportunity.


Elector Registration

There is no need to pre-register to vote as the registration of all electors for this election will take place at the time of voting. You will be required to make a declaration that you meet the following requirements:

  • 18 years of age or older on general voting day
  • Canadian citizen
  • resident of BC for at least 6 months immediately preceding the day you vote
  • resident of, OR registered owner of real property in, the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality for at least 30 days immediately preceding voting day, and not otherwise disqualified by law from voting.
  • not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or otherwise disqualified by law.

Resident electors must produce 2 pieces of identification (at least one with a signature). Picture identification is not necessary. The identification must prove both residency and identity.


Non-resident property electors must produce 2 pieces of identification (at least one with a signature) to verify identity, prove that they are entitled to register in relation to the property, and, if applicable, provide written consent from the majority of the property owners.


Mail Ballot Voting

Qualified Electors may vote by mail if you:

  • have a physical disability, illness or injury that affects your ability to vote at another voting opportunity, or
  • expect to be absent from the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality on general voting day and at the times of the advance voting opportunities.

Requesting a Mail Ballot Package:

Mail Ballot Packages can be applied for beginning Sunday, September 30th, 2018 by submitting the following information to the Chief Election Officers at Northern Rockies Regional Municipality Office by mail (Bag Service 399, Fort Nelson, BC V0C 1R0), Telephone (250-774-2541), Fax (250-774-6794) or email  Required information for a mail ballot package is listed below:

1. Full name,
2. Residential address,
3. Address of the property in relation to which you are voting (for non-resident property electors),
4. Method of delivery of your mail ballot package:
  • pick up at Municipal Office, OR
  • regular letter mail through Canada Post to residential address, OR
  • regular letter mail through Canada Post to an alternate address that you provide when requesting the ballot package,

5. To ensure you receive the correct registration application form in your package, you must indicate whether you are going to be registering as a resident or non-resident property elector.

6. Please note the Local Government Act requires all persons registering to vote by mail ballot to have their signature witnessed by another individual, who must also sign and provide his/her residential address.


The deadline for requesting mail ballots is 4:00 pm on October 17th, 2018.


The Municipality will send out mail ballot packages once the Ballots are printed. To be counted, your mail ballot must be received by the Chief Election Officer no later than 8:00 pm on Saturday, October 20, 2018. It is your responsibility to ensure the ballots arrive in time to be included in the final count, so it is recommended that you apply for your ballots early.


Other information

Please note that only residents of the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality are entitled to vote for Mayor and Councillors. If you live on First Nation Reserve Lands you are entitled to vote for School Trustee only unless you are a non-resident property owner of real property in the Northern Rockies under the Local Government Act.
