Residents Roll Up Their Sleeves for the Second

HealthCare ForumThink Tank

Fort Nelson - The Community HealthCare Forum hosted its second Think Tank over the Family Day long weekend, which was attended by a diverse group of residents who took the opportunity to share their thoughts on the challenges surrounding health care in Fort Nelson. They further rolled up their sleeves to dig into how some of their ideas could fulfill the opportunities that were identified in the first HealthCare Forum Think Tank held December 9, 2014.

The group considered information revealed in the first Think Tank, and then began to identify root causes, associate options and solutions with those items, and then rate options in terms of whether they were simple, smart and likely to succeed.

Participants were also provided the context of a community health profile, shared by Mike Simpson, Executive Lead, Community Services Integration & Implementation, Northern Health.  “During the first Think Tank, it was clear that the discussions would benefit from having access to more detailed health information about Fort Nelson,” Simpson notes. “Being able to inform participants of what types of conditions most affect their community, as the data demonstrates helps provide a basis for these conversations”.

“It was incredible to have people give their time over a weekend to talk about the reasons why we have certain challenges in Fort Nelson related to health care.” Project Chair, Laurie Dolan states.  “Then providing people with the platform to share their ideas and solutions as to how we address those challenges will be so valuable to Council’s decision-making moving forward. I can’t wait to learn about what the community had to share.”

The next phase of the Community HealthCare Forum will take the form of a community-wide survey to test Think Tank findings and outcomes. Distributed by way of a newsletter update, the survey will also be available online for ease of submission. It is anticipated that a Community HealthCare Forum workshop will be held in March 2015. Residents are also encouraged to visit the project website at and to share their thoughts about primary healthcare in Fort Nelson at
