AGRICULTURE THRIVING IN FORT NELSON NORTHERN ROCKIES

FORT NELSON - On June 16th, Mayor Streeper and members of Regional Council participated in an agricultural tour of local farms in the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality. The tour, led by Councillor Soles, Chair of the Northern Rockies Agriculture Committee and local farmer & producer, demonstrated the diverse and prosperous farming activities that are successful in the region.

Several properties were visited that validated sustainable farming in the Northern Rockies. Councillor Soles advises, “While agriculture is still in its infancy within the region, local producers successfully raise cattle, pigs, chickens, and other farm animals in addition to a variety of crops including oats, hay, barley, wheat and rye.” Each Saturday, from mid-May until mid-September, the Farmer’s Market showcases fresh,

locally grown produce, eggs, meat, and baked goods for sale.

The Farmer’s Market offers an abundance of seasonal fruits and vegetables including berries, rhubarb, apples, carrots, lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, rutabagas, potatoes and onions. Selling produce locally supports the farming community and provides fresh and healthy food choices for NRRM families.

Farmers and consumers both benefit from better access to fresh local food, creating economic opportunities for the agriculture community and increasing consumer choice and improving rural livelihoods and communities.
