Health Services

Occasionally, independent optometric clinics host Optometry Outreach Clinics in Fort Nelson. These clinics provide residents and their families with eye exams, access to eyeglasses and contact lenses and health screenings related to vision.  Suter Brook Optometry most frequently visits, and appointments can be made by contacting them directly.

Fort Nelson, the regional hub for northeastern BC, and the only service centre for many hundreds of kilometers in any direction, is an important health centre for the north. The Fort Nelson General Hospital houses 25 acute care beds, and 7 multi-level residential care beds. Care extends to lab and x-ray facilities, community counseling services, basic obstetrics and minor surgeries. Contact the Hospital at (250) 774-8100.

Additionally, Fort Nelson has:

  • two dental clinics,
  • two pharmacies,
  • the Northern Health Authority Health Unit,
  • drug and alcohol programs,
  • counseling services,
  • child\youth programs,
  • and several support groups and organizations.

The hospital hosts a regular visitation clinic schedule of specialists, such as pediatricians and OB-GYN, and complementary health care options such as massage therapy, acupuncture, and physiotherapy are also available.

To enhance health services, the NRRM is working closely with Northern Health and private Doctors and other health professionals to increase available service in Fort Nelson. Currently, the NRRM provides housing free of charge for one year to new Medical Doctors.  If you're interested in practicing in our rewarding community, and would like to know more, flip through our "Practice Living" brochure.
