Waste Diversion Initiatives - Composting

Budget: $1,100,000
Funding Sources:
NRRM; Infrastructure Canada
Construction Start Date:
2017
Type of Work:
Upgrade
Description:
The NRRM is moving forward with our waste diversion program, looking specifically at composting. Estimated costs for the installation of an Aerated Composting process is in the amount of $1,100,000 with annual operating costs estimated at approximately $100,000. There was an April grant opportunity for projects within the Infrastructure Canada Small Communities Fund. A project in support of waste diversion is a prime candidate for success and we have submitted an application. A $730,000 grant has been requested. At this time, this project is dependent upon approval of the Small Communities Fund grant. Should we be successful, construction would commence in 2017.

Landfill Renewal

Budget: $500,000
Funding Sources:
NRRM; Province of BC
Construction Start Date:
2016
Type of Work:
Renewal
Description:
The existing population utilizes landfill space every year, requiring the regular renewal this asset. The need for new cells is dependent upon volumes of waste received and will be deferred as necessary should solid waste volumes decrease. Future cell readiness is pertinent to continued landfill use. The 20 year capital plan identifies a rotating renewal budget to address landfill requirements, which consists of replacing existing cells as needed, maintenance and repair of drainage, roads, buildings, and electricity. Any funds remaining unspent will be set aside for future renewal needs. In 2016, cell 5 will is ready to tender for construction this summer. In addition to cell construction, other minor repairs will be made to buildings and fences.
