Northern Rockies Regional Municipality

Mike GILBERT

Among the opportunities available to me 38 years ago, I chose to teach in Fort Nelson. My experiences in the ensuing 38 years have proven the wisdom of that decision. Fort Nelson is where my wife, Lori and I have raised three happy sons, Michael, Matthew and James, made good friends and learned to appreciate life.

Prior to becoming Regional Development Officer with the NRRM, I was an elementary and secondary school teacher. I have worked with gifted students, students with behavioral challenges, been District Technology Co-ordinator, Vice Principal, and FNFN’s Director of Education and Executive Director, and have co-authored Provincial IT curriculum.

My post-secondary experience includes serving as a Counselor, Management, Computer Science and Pre-Power Engineering instructor with Northern Lights College, Education instructor with Simon Fraser University, and Governor on the Board of Northern Lights College.

I’ve learned from students, parents and colleagues. Coming from a working-class background, and having been a shipyard and construction labourer, I understand the challenges life can present to families and their children.

During 5 terms as trustee, I have applied what I’ve learned to attempting to ensure scarce resources are applied so as to have the greatest impact on our children’s development.
