Northern Rockies Regional Municipality

The Northern Rockies Regional Municipality's resilient economy has been tested with the economic downturn that has affected all aspects of the global marketplace since the fall of 2008. The encouraging optimism in the regional unconventional gas plays, with the projected developments of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Projects on the West Coast are tempered by hard and challenging circumstances for our Forestry Sector. Tourism, buoyed by the Alaska Highway, saw only a small decline in visitors in 2008, but has recovered fully and continues to increase annually.

In these times, our diverse business and resource base has again been called upon and delivered with jobs, investment, and opportunity remaining relatively steady; a dependable light in a world of uncertainty. A favorite metaphor for the economy of the NRRM is that it is a three-legged stool, and though the legs may grow and diminish as factors affect Forestry, Oil and Gas, and Tourism, there always remains a steady base for our citizens to depend upon as jobs and activities migrate to and from the three industries over time.
