Road Closure:42 Street/Alaska Highway

Intersection Upgrading

Please be advised that access to 42nd Street from the Alaska Highway will be closed to all traffic commencing Monday, August 14th and continuing for several weeks. Access to 42nd Street will be from 50th Ave North. The Alaska Highway may be subject to intermittent north and southbound lane closures at this location as well.

The intersection upgrades are being performed through a partnership with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. The work for this intersection will include:

  1. Replacement of undersized/damaged storm culverts
  2. Enhanced street lighting
  3. Improved crosswalk infrastructure
  4. Widening of the intersection to provide additional turning radius for large trucks

Backgrounder:

The Northern Rockies has been working closely with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) to identify opportunities to work together to correct various issues along the Alaska Highway corridor.  As a result, in 2013 the Alaska Highway Transportation Corridor Study (AHTCS) was developed in a 50/50 cost share project with MoTI. Since the completion of the report, several projects have been completed in partnership with MoTI, including the two signaled intersections at Gateway and Simpson Trail.

MoTI and the NRRM are now working towards smaller more functional upgrades along the Alaska Highway Corridor including the intersection of 42nd Street and the Alaska Highway. In the 2013 report, this intersection was identified as a high priority in the Alaska Highway Transportation Corridor Study due to lack of lighting, inadequate pedestrian crosswalk and yearly drainage issues which cause flooding in the adjacent area.
