Satellite Phone Reimbursement Policy
November 15, 2010
On November 8, 2010, Regional Council approved a Satellite Phone Reimbursement Policy.
Due to ongoing disruptions to maternity services in Fort Nelson, and with the significant risks of travel for maternity patients when required to seek care in other communities, Regional Council supports the reimbursement of fees related to a satellite phone rental in such instances.
The unreliability of digital and analog cellular service along the Alaska Highway between Fort Nelson and Fort St. John in particular necessitates the use of a satellite phone for communication with emergency personnel.
The Northern Rockies continues to seek solutions and remedies for some of the effects on a range of medical services resulting from the shortage of physicians in Fort Nelson.
The Regional Municipality will reimburse maximum costs of $100 per family, per year (based on a rental rate of $30 per day, and $1.79 per minute).
Satellite Phone are available for rent at Earth Communications. 250-774-4111.
