2010 Budget Meetings

Regional Council held their 2010 Budget Meetings on Saturday, April 17th. The budget meeting was attended by all members of the management team and was an opportunity to discuss community projects proposed for the upcoming year.
In addition to the annual approval of standard municipal expenses, decisions made during budget meetings establish some of the new and exciting developments the community can expect to see throughout the year. Contained below are a few highlights of such decision that your Regional Council has committed to in 2010…
Old Fort Nelson Village Heritage Conservation Area
Regional Council approved $10,000 to work toward establishing a Heritage Conservation Area for the Old Fort Nelson Village Site. Working in concert with Fort Nelson First Nation, the intent is to have mechanisms in place to ensure protection of the special heritage and cultural value of the area.
Fort Nelson Bear Response Program
Approval was given for the continuation of the financial partnership with the Conservation Officer Service, Ministry of Environment for the Fort Nelson Bear Response Program. Council has also committed the remaining funding from 2009 to be utilized to purchase a Bear Trap that will be committed for use within the Community and adjacent rural areas.
Accessibility
Recognizing that due to the existing configuration of entrances, accessibility to the Fort Nelson Public Library and the Municipal Office can be a challenge for some citizens Regional Council has approved funds to install automatic door operators.
Outdoor Recreation
Approval was given for the addition of playground equipment geared to pre-school aged children at the Art Fraser Park which will provide play opportunities for a wider age range of the community's children. Funding was also allocated for the clean-up of the Muskwa Heights Park area, maintenance to the 301 Ball Diamonds, improvements to the outfields of both Ball Diamonds located at Art Fraser Park, and the acquisition of specialized equipment to maintain the ball diamonds and green spaces in the community.
Tetsa River & Andy Bailey Regional Campgrounds
Campers will see improvements at both Regional Campgrounds this year with the replacement of some of the picnic tables and fire pit areas.
Continued Support for Forestry
Regional Council is committed to support of the Fort Nelson Forestry Round Table with funding allocated to targeted travel, advertising and research as necessary.
Remote Community Electrification
With the success of the Toad River Electrification Project, it is hoped that Muncho Lake may be eligible for the Remote Community Electrification Program; therefore, a budget was established to ensure baseline data can be established for the area.
