Fort Nelson's many cultural & recreation facilities provide an excellent quality of life for residents.  There is something for everyone.

Andy Bailey Regional Campground This quiet forest oasis is located just off Mile 265 of the Alaska Highway down a 12 km gravel access road.  Amenities of this local gem include 5 unserviced campsites (not suitable for large RVs and trailers), day use area, and a non-motorized boat launch.  A great place to stop for a picnic or a quick fishing adventure.  Campsite Fee is $17.00 includes HST.  No reservations.

 


 

The Aquatic Centre includes a 25-metre swimming pool equipped with a diving board, two slides, whirlpool and sauna.  General swims, swimming lessons, water sports, special events, rentals, birthday parties and training.  It is also home to the Fort Nelson Finns Swim Club.        

                                                                                 

 


 

The Community Trail Phase 1  Developed and endorsed by the Fort Nelson Spirit Community Committee, this phased development is a paved 4.7 km non-motorized trail which is 3 metres wide.  In the spring of 2009, Regional Council successfully applied for project funding through the LocalMotion Program receiving $602,670, with matching funds being supplied by the Regional Municipality.  The trail is intended for phased development, with construction of Phase 1 extending from the municipal water treatment plant in the southeast of Fort Nelson to Simpson Trail in the northwest. 

Scheduled for completion in the summer of 2010, the Community Trail Phase 1 will boast a wide variety of recreational opportunities such as walking, jogging, bicycling, roller blading, bird watching, wildlife viewing and nature interpretation.  Development of the remainder of the trail west of Simpson Trail and along the Alaska Highway Boulevard is intended for future phases of development.  Map [PDF - 232 KB]


 

Parks & Playgrounds and Playing Fields are found throughout town and boast  amenities such as baseball diamonds, soccer fields, playground equipment, picnic tables and bbq pits.  Please call the Rec. Dept. for details.  Details  Map [PDF - 215 KB]

 

 

 


 

The Phoenix Theatre is a 275 seat performing arts/movie theatre which was completed in 1992.  It has greatly enriched the quality of life for area residents.  Shows run Thursday to Sunday (normally at 8:00 pm)  Call (250) 774-SHOW for information.

 

 

 

 

 


 

Poplar Hills Golf and Country Club is a 9-hole, championship calibre course.  It includes a driving range, putting green, pro shop, carts and equipment rentals, concession, lounge and partially covered patio.  Call (250) 774-3862 to book your tee-time.

 

 

 


 

 

The Fort Nelson Public Library is a full facility library with internet capabilities.  Contact (250) 774-6777 for hours of operation.

 

 

 

 

 


 

Tetsa River Campground Regional Park  Recreation and adventure opportunties abound at  this 25 site un-serviced campground.  Located off of Mile 358 of the Alaska Highway, this campsite boasts great fishing, spectacular scenery and is close to several hiking trails.  Campsite Fee is $17 includes HST.  For reservations, please call (250)321-3321.  More Information [PDF - 328 KB]

 

 

 


The Demonstration Forest comprises 400 hectares in an area called the Fort Nelson Lowlands.  Hike, bike, cross country ski, or take a walk through this example of a unique ecosystem.  Various length trails, educational signs, wildflowers and bird watching opportunities, make this a great place for a stroll.  Upgraded in 2009, the trail system [PDF - 4.2 MB] is easier to navigate, and dotted with new interpretive signs.

 


The Fort Nelson Heritage Museum offers an outstanding collection of treasures.  Poke around one of the best museums of the Alaska highway.  A gold mine of memorabilia, the museum captures the flavour of the early trapping days of Fort Nelson, portrays the Fort Nelson's place in the history of the Highway, and boasts a vintage car collection.  For hours of operation, or more information, contact (250) 774-3536.
