Community Development & Planning
This Department is divided in to the Planning Division and the Community Economic Development and Tourism Division.
Community Economic Development and Tourism Division
The role of the Community Economic Development and Tourism Division focuses on strengthening the economic base of the town of Fort Nelson and outlying communities of the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality, crossing all sectors. A wide range of infrastructure issues are addressed, which contributes to the overall 'climate' for business in the community. A focus on communication with local business, industry, relevant government industries, and trade organizations helps this division to plan, organize, and manage various projects designed to positively impact our local community and economy.
During the summer months, with the heavy tourist traffic attracted by the Alaska Highway, the Division oversees the contract for the Visitor Information Centre (operated by the Fort Nelson & District Chamber of Commerce) and other tourism programs, providing a unique overview of the Regional Municipality.
A long anticipated Tourism Northern Rockies website was launched in 2008 and provides up-to-date information for visitors to the North.
The role of the Planning Division is to promote good planning through the provision of information and service to Regional Council, the development community and the general public. This can take many forms, but typically includes:
- providing Regional Council with advice and recommendations on planning matters;
- undertaking land use related studies;
- carrying out delegated authorities on behalf of Regional Council, such as processing development applications; and
- providing land related information to Regional Council, agencies, and the public.
Generally the Planning Division's tasks are divided between 5 major functions:
- Current Planning,
- Long Range Planning,
- Building Inspection (For more information, see the Publications & Development Guides page),
- Business Licensing and
- Mapping services.
