Election 2011
This November, residents of the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality and School District 81 will be going to the polls to elect the Mayor, Councillors and School Trustees.
Nominations are being sought for the following positions:
- Mayor: 1 person to be elected
- Regional Councillor: 6 persons to be elected
- School District #81 Trustee: 5 persons to be elected
for a 3-year term (December 2011 to December 2014)

General Voting Day: Saturday, November 19th - 8:00am to 8:00pm

Advanced Voting: Wednesday, November 9th - 8:00am to 8:00pm and Wednesday, November 16th - 8:00am to 8:00pm
Where
For both the general and advance polls you can vote in the lower lobby of the Northern Rockies Municipal Hall, 5319 - 50th Ave South Fort Nelson. On general voting day there will also be a polling station at the Toad River Community Hall.
If you expect to be out of the Municipality this November or have an injury or disability that affects your mobility you also have the option to vote via a mail-in ballot.
Starting October 31st, applications will be accepted by the Chief Elections Officer for a mail-in ballot package. You will be required to provide the following information:
- Your full name;
- Your residential address;
- If you are voting as a non-resident property elector, the address of the property in relation to which you are voting; and

Whether you will pick up your package at Municipal Hall or have the package sent to you via regular letter mail through Canada Post to an address of your choosing.
The last day to apply to vote via mail-in ballot is November 17th, 2011.

Who May Vote
To vote in a local government election, you must meet the following requirements:
- be a resident elector or non-resident property elector at the time of voting;
- not be disqualified by the Local Government Act or other Act.
At the polling station you will be required to produce to the election official at least 2 documents that provide evidence of your identity and place of residence (at least one of which must contain your signature).
People who own property within the Municipality but live outside of its boundaries can still vote in the upcoming election. If you fall into this category you are required to fill out the non-resident property elector application form and the non-resident property elector consent form and submit these documents prior to voting. Please note that if the land title has more than one property owner listed, only one of the property owners is allowed to vote.
Please note that, as the Prophet River First Nation and Fort Nelson First Nation opted to have their reserves not included in the February 6, 2009 incorporation of the Regional Municipality, anyone living on these reserves is not eligible to vote for Mayor or Council as a resident elector.
Those living on either the Fort Nelson First Nation Reserve or the Prophet River First Nation Reserve are entitled to vote for School Trustees.
Interested in Running?
Elections officials have prepared nomination packages for potential candidates for Mayor and Council. These packages can be picked up beginning September 14th, 2011 from either the Chief Election Officer Heather Cosman or Deputy Chief Elections Officer Ross Coupé at the Municipal Hall.
In order to run as a candidate for any local government office you must be nominated by at least two people who are qualified to vote in the jurisdiction where you are seeking election.
The period of nomination begins at 9:00 am on Tuesday, October 4th, 2011, and ends at 4:00 pm on Friday, October 14th, 2011. This is the only time that Nominations can be accepted.
