What is a Residential Housing Strategy?

The NRRM Fort Nelson Residential Housing Strategy [> 6MB] - opens in the NRRM Filepro site is a technical study that identifies the amount and locations best suited for residential development. Lands identified in the strategy include both those lands available for immediate residential development, as well as areas that are best suited for future residential housing needs.  The NRRM Fort Nelson Residential Housing Strategy [> 6MB] - opens in the NRRM Filepro site will describe all constraints to development and the methods required to make suitable land available for development. In addition, the Strategy will inform the future growth and development of the community, and can be used to help develop a new Official Community Plan for the Regional Municipality.

Why are we developing a Residential Housing Strategy for the NRRM?

There is a strong feeling among residents that Fort Nelson is currently facing a housing shortage. Factors leading to this feeling include:

· Limited market housing;

· Aging housing stock and infrastructure;

· Lack of quality housing;

· Lack of builders in the area;

· High cost of construction;

· Lack of affordable housing;

· Financing constraints with older mobile homes; and,

· Lack of available land for development.

It is also predicted that Fort Nelson will soon be seeing a higher rate of population growth which will only serve to multiply these issues. A residential housing strategy will identify the land that is readily available for development, and outline the process required to meet current and future housing needs.

Public Open House

An open house was held on June 23rd 2010 from 7-9pm at the Municipal Hall. Between 20 and 30 people attended and some great discussion will be incorporated into the final strategy.
