Investment Opportunities
Fort Nelson's resilient and diverse economy continues to offer opportunity for entrepreneurial individuals and companies. Following is a brief list of the areas where the CD&P department have recognized as rich with potential. If you have further questions regarding any of these opportunities, please contact us directly using our Contact Us page.
Land Development
Light Industrial Development
The NRRM is working to release land in the light industrial area of Fort Nelson, South of the Alaska Highway. There has been great interest in this land release, and we believe it will ensure adequate space for the development of a larger and more complex Oil and Gas Service Sector industry in Fort Nelson. Please go to the Light Industrial Land Expansion page, or our Industrial and Commercial Property Sales page for more information.
Commercial Development
Commercial space will likely become more and more popular in Fort Nelson. There have been many inquiries about shop space, yard space, and office space in Fort Nelson. Please contact our offices for information on available lands, our planning strategy, and other opportunities.
Residential Development
Upon the completion of our Light Industrial Land expansion, the CD&P department intends to embark on a comprehensive residential land review. As our projections indicate a need for a greater residential inventory, we wish to ensure we avoid land or accommodation shortages in the future. Currently, one higher density development is planned near the centre of town, and work continues in the Aspen residential subdivision and the Angus I and Angus II subdivisions on the North-East end of town. For more information, please contact our offices.
Gateway Commercial Development
With the ongoing development of the light industrial expansion comes an incredible opportunity for lease space with M.A. Charlton & Associates. See the highlighting document here [PDF - 832 KB].
Northern Rockies Partnership
Northern Rockies Partnership is a unique coming together of Local Government, First Nations, Industry and the Provincial Government for successful regional development. Fort Nelson First Nation and the NRRM have recently committed to working together to this end. For more information, check out the Northern Rockies Partnership Brochure [PDF - 2.8 MB].
Forestry
Value-Added Wood Products
Fort Nelson's beetle free, diverse wood basket is benefited by its proximity to rail access, its extraordinary health, and its proximity to a new and growing customer in the Oil and Gas industry. The CD&P department anticipates that Value-Added wood products will be a fixture of Fort Nelson's economy in the near future, and is confident that Forestry will again be the primary industry in Fort Nelson in the future. The Fort Nelson Forestry Roundtable Committee (a committee of the NRRM Regional Council) was instituted in 2008 in response to the closure of Canfor's Polarboard OSB mill. The FNFRT, as it is known as, serves as a place for the NRRM, large tenure holders, forestry related businesses, the Ministry of Forests and Range, and Forestry Unions can come together to discuss ways to capitalize on opportunities, promote the industry, and foster co-operation for the future of the forest industry in Fort Nelson.
Tourism
There are many opportunities in the Tourism sector in the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality. With the Muska-Kechika 6.5 million hectare wilderness in our back-yard, the world famous Liard hotsprings a day trip from Fort Nelson, and the historic Alaska Highway attracting thousands of tourists every year, we anticipate growth in many areas. Please refer to our Tourism Strategic Plan [PDF - 2 MB] for more specific ideas, or contact our offices.Oil and Gas Service Sector
The NRRM is activily involved in ensuring that jobs created in the Oil and Gas service sector benefit our local citizens and economy. Our membership on the MEMPR-led Service Sector Advisory Committee, the Fort Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce, and EnergyServicesBC all serve to ensure that the NRRM is in tune with the needs of our local businesses and the Oil and Gas Industry. Our support and assistance in the production of the Horn River Basin "Report Cards" will also serve to identify gaps in our local Service Sector. Contact us for more information.
Day Care Services
Day Care services are often difficult to find in Fort Nelson, which makes it challenging for many other industries to attract workers. There are provinical programs and other opportunities to take advantage of if this is an area of interest for you. Contact us for more information.Retail
As a somewhat isolated community, though fortunate to have extensive transportation links by rail (CN), air (regular scheduled, cargo, and charter fixed wing or helicopter), and the Alaska Highway, Fort Nelson's citizens travel often for some amenities. Expanded retail options are likely as the Fort Nelson grows.Publications
