Fort Nelson Forestry Roundtable

Fort Nelson's Round Table for the Future of the Forest Industry in Fort Nelson (Forestry Roundtable or FNFRT) was established by Regional Council in 2008 in response to the impending closure of Canfor's mills in Fort Nelson.  Community Futures granted the Roundtable $10,000 to kick off their initiatives.

Since then, the Roundtable has been effective at bringing stakeholders together for sharing of ideas, collaborating efforts, and lobbying levels of government for changes that can positively influence the Forest Industry.

See past minutes of the Forestry Roundtable (opens in a new tab or window) on the NRRM's FilePro site where official documents, Council Minutes, and reports are also stored.

Fibre Utilization

A Potential End Users Contact List [PDF - 665 KB] for increased Fibre Utilization was released by the Fort Nelson Forestry Roundtable to help connect potential end users with Oil and Gas Companies with wood fibre on hand.  Check out the Horn River Basin page for more information on this and other initiatives in the Horn River Basin.

BCTSBC Timber Sales (BCTS), an active member of the Roundtable, has developed a web-page where Oil and Gas Producer Companies can submit fibre available, and then have interested parties bid on the wood.  Whether you have wood available, or are interested in purchasing fibre, this is a great site to start the process.

The Forestry Roundtable has been active in lobbying for greater local access to wood residue from Oil and Gas operations, (these efforts were partially responsible for the Fibre Utilization Form [PDF - 306 KB] developed by the Oil and Gas Commission) as well as successful in initiating a Job Opportunities Program application for the upgrade of the Fort Nelson Demonstration Forest and Snowmobile Trails.  To explore more options, members traveled to Vancouver in October 2009 to attend the 8th Biennial Wood Residue Conference.

Community Forest Tenure

Currently, members of the Roundtable, NRRM staff, and Fort Nelson First Nation staff are working to apply for a Community Forest Tenure
