Application Process & Associated Forms and Information

If you are planning to operate, or already operate a business in Fort Nelson or the NRRM, you need a business license! There are two zones, Zone 1 includes Fort Nelson and the rural area surrounding Fort Nelson, whereas Zone 2 includes the rest of the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality.

  • Allows NRRM Economic Development staff to be aware of your business when promoting Fort Nelson and NRRM based services to investors and industry
  • Tells your customers that you are a local business, in compliance with local regulations, and trustworthy.

STEP 1

Check that your business is appropriate your zoning. Please reference the Zoning Bylaw No. 729, 2008 [PDF - 1.7 MB] - Opens in the NRRM Filepro site to ensure that your busines complies with the zoning regulations. Please note that Home Based Business, Bed and Breakfast, and Home Industry regulations are found in sections 4.8, 4.9, and 4.10 on page 23 of the Zoning Bylaw No. 729, 2008 [PDF - 1.7 MB] - Opens in the NRRM Filepro site.

You can also use BizPaL (see description to the right) to determine any other applications you may need to make, depending on the type of business you are proposing.

STEP 2

Fill out the business license application form [PDF - 29 KB] and submit it in any of the following ways:

  1. drop it off in person to the Community Development & Planning Department at the Town Office -5319 50th Avenue South, Fort Nelson, Town Square Complex.
  2. fax it to the Community Development & Planning Department at the Town Office - (250) 774-6794
  3. mail it to the Community Development & Planning Department - Town of Fort Nelson, Bag Service 399, Fort Nelson, BC - V0C 1R0
  4. email it to the Community Development & Planning Department: ecdev@northernrockies.org.

STEP 3

The business license application is then subject to four further internal steps:
  1. approval by the Planner
  2. approval by Fire Chief;
  3. approval by Chief Building Inspector;
  4. assignment of application fee by License Inspector per RM21 Business License & Regulation Bylaw No. 21, 2010 [PDF - 1.4 MB] - Opens in the NRRM Filepro site

STEP 4

Within 5 to 10 business days, the applicant will be contacted by Treasury Department Clerk to inform of approval status, and confirm fee as assigned by Community Development and Planning Department. Once the fee is received, Treasury Department will release the license. Applicant may pay for and pick up the license from the Treasury Department at the same time.

* Please note that if an application is submitted after August 1, business license application fee will be reduced by 50%. Renewal of business license for following year will be subject to license fee in its entirety.
